How to convert a video

  1. Add your videos. Click "Choose videos" or drag files onto the box. You can add several at once.
  2. Pick a format. Choose MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF or MP3, and optionally a smaller resolution.
  3. Convert and download. Click Convert. When a file shows "Done", download it, or download everything as one ZIP.

The first conversion downloads the conversion engine (about 32 MB). Your browser keeps it afterwards, so later visits start faster. Conversion runs on your own computer, so speed depends on its power and on the size of the video.

Your videos stay on your device

Free Video Converter runs FFmpeg, a widely used open-source video tool, compiled to WebAssembly directly in your browser. Your files are read from your disk and the converted result is created in your browser's memory. They are not uploaded to our servers. You can verify this yourself with your browser's developer tools; here is how.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files set by us. The site may show advertising to cover its costs.

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens in your browser. The only thing downloaded is the page itself and, on first use, the conversion engine. Like any website, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs; see the privacy policy.

How large a video can I convert?

We do not set a file size limit, but the whole file is loaded into your browser's memory. Very large files may fail, particularly on phones and tablets. If a conversion fails, try a lower resolution, close other tabs, or convert fewer files at once.

Why is it slower than a desktop program?

The conversion engine runs inside the browser on a single thread, which is slower than a native application that can use all of your computer's resources. For very long or high-resolution videos, a desktop converter will be faster.

Which files can it open?

Common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, FLV, WMV, 3GP, TS and MPEG. We have not tested every possible codec. If a file cannot be converted, an error is shown next to it.

Does it keep subtitles and extra audio tracks?

No guarantee. One video stream and one audio stream are kept by default, so do not rely on subtitles or alternative audio tracks being preserved.

Can it download videos from YouTube or other sites?

No. It only converts files that you already have on your device, and it cannot remove copy protection. Only convert content you have the right to use.
